Directed by Roger Nygard, Trekkies 2 is hosted by Denise Crosby, the actress who played Tasha Yar on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The filmmakers visit Star Trek fans all over the world, including the Spock of Germany, an Englishman who transformed his flat into a starship and auctioned it on the internet for $2 million, and the first convention ever held in Serbia. The film also checks in on some of the original Trekkies profilees like wunderkind Gabriel Koerner and Whitewater juror Barbara Adams.
Trekkies 2 is a hilarious, yet respectful look at Trek fandom from around the world. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a DVD in quite a while.

So, what is it: Trekkies, or Trekkers? If I'm up on the lingo, "Trekkies" refers to casual fans who appreciate, but don't closely follow, the show, and "Trekkers" is a term for hard-core fans. Trekkies 2 neither confirms nor denies this, but it does provide some solid entertainment and a broad perspective on the fandom of Star Trek. Watch it with a Trekkie you love.

All in all, it's not quite as interesting and amusing as the original film, if for no other reason than that it covers a lot of familiar ground and starts to repeat itself in the end. (How many fan films can we visit the set of?) Still, it's one of those rare films in which both fans of Trek and its detractors will be able to find a worthwhile time.

Moments of pathos and hope distinguish Trekkies 2 from its predecessor, which, while celebrated, came under a great deal of criticism from Trek fandom as condescending and hostile. Beneath the end credits of this film runs a montage of such criticisms, and Nygard freely admits that one of his purposes in making the sequel was to show the fans in a more positive light.

Trekkies 2 is a reasonably entertaining, if overly long, second look at the fans of Star Trek, this time expanding to the global fan community as well as returning to Trek's home-grown fandom.
