Britain's comic genius, Stephen Fry, travels around each of America's states in his black London cab in order to discover, in his own inimitable style, what makes the country unique and to get under the skin of American life. His journey across the vast country takes him to a whiskey distillery in Kentucky, lava fields in Hawaii, an Amish community in Wisconsin and a brothel in Nevada, as well as hunting in New York State, sailing on an America's Cup boat in Rhode Island, basket weaving with Navajo Indians and meeting environmental activists in Oregon. Stephen is shown the country by its proud citizens as he drives across the continent uncovering the idiosyncrasies that makes each state individual and the similarities that make America distinct.
Stephen Fry in America is a delightful and canard smashing trip zipping through the States at breakneck speed. It's six hours of 'stuffed to the gills' TV.

Stephen Fry in America gives us a view of America that hasn't really been shown in other prime-time travelogues and (for this reviewer at least) the fact that it has Stephen Fry in the title gives it extra kudos from the beginning.

Making his way right across the Union in six episodes, Fry gives us a quite unique whistlestop tour of the USA that embraces its diverse culture, exceptional characters, immense contradictions and incredible attractions.

Lovely, cuddly and very British, Stephen Fry can be forgiven his stereotypes and all the obvious staging that is part and parcel of modern travelogues. He can be forgiven this because he is the most reflexive sort imaginable, he is clearly very upper class, very educated and quite privileged but then he also was all those caricatures of these characterisitics when he played Lord Snoot or Lord Melchett. He knows he is posh and he is so awfully sorry about it.

What really lifts Stephen Fry In America is the joyful intrigue of our tour guide. Fry is an ideal choice for a project such as this, with his mix of intelligence, humour and genuine interest in the subject matter simply hard to resist.
