From their meager beginning in the 1980s as "the red headed stepchild" of sports through four World Cups and three Olympic games, Dare to Dream examines how Mia Hamm broke through as a media phenomenon, why Brandi Chastain's celebratory moment stirred so much controversy, and how Julie Foudy, Michelle Akers, and Joy Fawcett overcame daunting obstacles to help the team step into history, and in the process lift the aspirations of all young women.
While it is a great story I think that the production of this documentary is also extremely well done. Great action scenes, great interviews, and some great private video footage. Excellent - an absolute must for any fan of women's soccer.

The decision to showcase the Women's program in terms of what it's done since 1991, combined with a load of locker room and "on the bus" footage shot by the players, make this a refreshingly candid and enjoyable documentary, and even if you already know a lot about the players and the team, the additional perspective certainly keeps you hooked in.

HBO's "Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team" is a competent but unremarkable documentary about the ladies who were at the forefront of the American women's soccer craze circa 1999.

I may not care about soccer, let alone women’s soccer, but I certainly enjoyed Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. It may have helped that I knew nothing about the team going in, making every game outcome an unknown until the clock ran out.
