MARRIED IN AMERICA 2 is the second film in an ongoing documentary about the challenges of marriage in the 21st century. In 2001, Apted shot the first installment, which featured nine very different soon-to-be-married couples discussing how they met, their views on sex, divorce, children, and their dreams for the future.
Apted sought a cross-section of American marriages to reflect the changing nature of the institution: women making more money than their husbands, divorced people re-marrying and blending their families, an increase in interfaith and bi-racial couples, and the controversial brave new world of same-sex marriage.
Five years after the first film, Apted revisits the nine couples to find out how they have coped with the twists and turns of married life: the arrival of children, job changes, the need to move, income disparity, and how to find the time for intimacy when both partners are working flat out.
Apted maintains an even-handed, non-judgmental approach, letting his subjects simply speak for themselves no matter how questionable some of their decision-making skills might be, making for non-stop viewing.

If this series works as well as "Up" the curiosity will build with each installment. Apted has an interesting challenge facing him now. When couples break up and each partner remarries, will the film follow each of those new marriages? Will they be able to get bitterly divorced couples in a room together for an interview? If itīs anything like the "Up" series, it will be fascinating to watch it all unfold over time.

At once riveting and terrifying, "MIA2" puts the "real" back into reality programming because there is nothing set up or phony here - no fake living arrangements or contests.

"Married In America 2" is a revealing look at the various stages of marriages in America. I think anyone who has ever been married or in a serious relationship can identify with this film. Additionally, the viewer will undoubtedly learn about what makes a stable marriage.
