Narrower focus may lend this less crossover appeal than "Step Into Liquid," which was practically a recruitment poster for the surfing lifestyle. But such a tight focus might also make "Billabong" a repeat must-see for more dedicated boarders and wannabes.

There are better surf movies out there, but I doubt if better footage exists than the opening shot (even if it is cropped). It is up to you whether five minutes of exquisite footage is worth the purchase price.

We're left hoping for more of that amazing footage that you saw at the beginning of the film, and while at times the movie comes close to matching it, it never quite gets there, and what we're left with is a solid, if ultimately unremarkable, surfing documentary.

You might also find yourself intrigued about how weather reports, simulators, and jet skis are enabling this kind of extreme surfing, but in the end, even die-hard surfheads will want these clowns to just shut up and get on their boards.
